Context

Enchanted is my end-of-1st year project made in Unity which consisted in making a Shoot'em up 3D game in 1 month.

In this game, you play as a "good" witch who has to save the city from a "bad" witch who is destroying the city and sending waves of enemies consisting of objects. You progress through the city, eliminating ennemies and retrieving power-ups.

Role

I worked as both a Game and Level Designer designing the mechanics, balancing the ennemies, making waves pattern.

Game/Level Design

We had the intention to target Hardcore gamers, so I designed the game with simple controls and automatic fire so the player focuses on enemies and on their placement. Then, I designed waves keeping in mind I needed various enemies and patterns to force the player to use all the space. To balance this game, I used a multicriteria settings matrix allowing me to assign a score and then a danger index for each enemy.

Unfortunately and despite all the theory I had thinked about, the game wasn't that fun in the end. The game had an issue with balance, hitboxes and a lack of interesting patterns. Due to the fact I didn't get my hands on the prototype early enough, I did not test out the theory in order to rework it. At the end of the project, I realized we had an issue with managing tasks, especially for the programming part resulting in a game which is visually interesting but not fun.

Post mortem

The lesson I learnt for future projects is : making sure the game we're making is fun before anything else, then we can focus on making it look good.
